Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
To calculate your cumulative GPA, multiply each course grade's point value by its credit hours to get quality points. Add up all quality points and divide by the total credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course gives 12 quality points. Sum all quality points across all semesters and divide by total credits to get your cumulative GPA.
What is a good cumulative GPA?
A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is generally considered good. A GPA of 3.5 or above is considered very good, and 3.7 or above is excellent. For graduate school admissions, most programs expect a minimum GPA of 3.0, while competitive programs may require 3.5 or higher. Dean's List typically requires a 3.5 GPA, and Summa Cum Laude usually requires 3.9 or above.
What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?
Semester GPA is calculated using only the courses from a single semester. Cumulative GPA includes all courses from every semester you have completed. Your cumulative GPA is the overall average that appears on your transcript and is used for graduation requirements, honors, and job applications. This calculator shows both: individual semester GPAs and the overall cumulative GPA.
How are letter grades converted to GPA points?
The standard conversion is: A+ and A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, and F = 0.0. Some schools use variations, so check your institution's grading scale. This calculator supports both standard (A-F) and plus/minus grading scales.
Can I include my previous GPA when calculating?
Yes. Enter your existing cumulative GPA and total credit hours in the "Previous Cumulative GPA" section at the top. The calculator will combine those with your new courses to calculate an updated cumulative GPA. This is useful when you only need to add one new semester to your existing academic record.
