Add a queue job after upload. Need virus scanning? Plug ClamAV into the service. Need a different frontend framework? The API stays exactly the same. That's the beauty of building it as a proper full-stack system rather than hacking things together.
Start with the server-side upload approach. It's simpler and easier to debug. Move to direct-to-S3 when you need the performance, and consider chunked uploads only when you're handling files above 50-100MB.
