What is a robots.txt file?
A robots.txt file tells search engine crawlers which pages they can or cannot access on your site. It lives at the root of your domain (e.g., example.com/robots.txt) and uses simple directives to control crawling.
Where do I put my robots.txt file?
Place it at the root of your website so it's at yoursite.com/robots.txt. Upload via FTP, your hosting control panel, or include it in your deployment. For Laravel, place it in the public/ directory.
Does robots.txt block pages from appearing in Google?
Not completely. Robots.txt prevents crawling, but Google can still index the URL if other pages link to it. To fully prevent indexing, use the noindex meta tag or X-Robots-Tag header instead.
What is crawl delay?
Crawl-delay tells bots to wait X seconds between requests to prevent overloading your server. Bing and Yandex respect it, but Googlebot ignores it. Use Google Search Console's crawl rate settings instead.
Should I add my sitemap to robots.txt?
Yes! Adding a Sitemap directive helps search engines discover your XML sitemap faster. This is especially useful if you haven't manually submitted it through Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools.
